PRESS RELEASE (9/12/2001)

Random attacks on the Sikh Community
aftermath of recent tragedy

The Sikh-Americans across North America unequivocally condemn the ghastly attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. We stand behind the US Government, state and local authorities in apprehending and punishing the perpetrators. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Sikh Community, which numbers over 500,000 in America, are with the victims and their families. We convey our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to them.

Unfortunately, the Sikh Community is becoming the target of random attacks, because some people identify our turbans and beards with the suspects. The media has shown carelessness and insensitivity with regard to the safety of law-abiding citizens of distinct identity by repeatedly showing pictures of the alleged perpetrator wearing a turban. The police and other law enforcement agencies need to intervene expeditiously to protect the life and property of all citizens.

The Sikh Community has no conflict with the U.S. interests in any region of the world. We appeal to our fellow Americans for unity and mutual respect in the face of this grave national crisis. Otherwise, the bigotry and hatred which has inflicted these tragic attacks on this great nation can destroy peace and harmony of this increasingly diverse society.

Thank you and God bless you all.
